Festival

History

The festival is free and open to the general public in addition to the Romanian community. It is typically organized in early Fall, either in August or September, right after school starts and when most summer activities are wrapped up. It takes place usually on one day, either a Saturday or a Sunday for about 7-9 hours. You can expect traditional Romanian atmosphere including traditional Romanian dishes, traditional music, folk dance performances by local folk-dance groups as well as informational booths about Romania’s rich history and culture.

This year the annual Romanian Festival organized by the Romanian-American Freedom Alliance (RAFA) will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 11 am to 5 pm in Lakewood, Colorado. As you probably know, the festival has not been taking place in the last 3 years, due to a variety of reasons, but mainly because of the more stringent legal requirements imposed by the city of Boulder and low funds. This year RAFA board members have worked diligently to find a new venue that is more centrally located, so that we can continue this long tradition of having an annual Romanian Festival in CO. The event will take place at Belmar Plaza, 433 S Teller Street, Lakewood, CO 80226. Our efforts in organizing this festival are trifold: to promote our rich history, traditions and culture, to strengthen our local Romanian community and, through the funds raised, to support those less fortunate back in Romania. Given that the festival has not been held for the last three years and we have a new location, our focus this year is to revive this main event that brings Romanians and other nationalities from all over Colorado together by a creating a festival program that is more attractive. In addition to having the traditional folk groups perform, RAFA is working on several new projects including obtaining a liquor license and contracting with local and out of state artists to perform live traditional and folk music. Of course, all these new efforts bring additional costs which impact the funds raised and ultimately our organization’s ability to make a difference and bring relief to needy families and children in Romania. We encourage you to become a sponsor and help us raise $5,000 this year. RAFA is a non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible.
